Sweet as Honey

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Honey is very well-behaved.  She sits without being told as soon as you approach with a leash.  She loves to give kisses - and yes, she will kiss you right on the lips!  Honey looks like she be part Akita or Shiba Inu with her curly tail and light coloring; but she’s not full-bred because she has a smooth, short coat (not a fluffy one like these breeds would).  She’s probably got some yellow lab and greyhound in her bloodlines, too.  The great thing about mixed breeds of they are often so likeable and behaved and Honey is no exception.  She is super sweet and loving and craves human attention.  Her nose is marked beautifully with a pink birthmark that gives her a more girlish appearance. She walks well on a leash and always looks like she is smiling!

Lizards and Birdies and Froggies. Oh my! (Carrie)

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Carrie is high energy and believes dogs are not meant to be crated.  Yes, she has told us this time and time again by climbing out of a fenced kennel and trying to escape from her indoor kennel.  I even think she has been trying to use her dog bed as a trampoline.  Carrie is still working on house training.   She is too distracted when she is on walks to waster her time with peeing and pooing.  Afterall, there are lizards and birdies and froggies to chase!

She pulls on the leash when walking, but not too much - she could use some training and a patient family. She is playful and always looks happy with her tail wagging constantly. She wants to run and jump and play all the time. She eats her dog food with no problem.  And she will sit for a treat!

Someone sent me this poem and I thought some of you would enjoy it.  The description of the shelter workers in no way reflects Houndhaven - I assure you all of our dogs go outside at least 4 times daily!

I rescued a human today

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.
I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid.
As she stopped at my kennel,  I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage.
I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today.
Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past.

I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.
I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.
Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.
A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe

I would promise to always be by her side.

I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor.
So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors.

So many more to be saved.
At least I could save one.
I rescued a human today.
