Adoptable Dogs

Please note:

If a dog was brought to the shelter as a stray, we adhere to the following policy regarding returning the dog to a party claiming to own it.  We have the following policy regarding stray intakes:

The owner of such dog may reclaim by:
1. emailing houndhaveninc@aol.com within 5 days of the date the dog came to Houndhaven,
2. identifying the dog accurately,
3. providing proof of ownership,
4. promptly arranging a mutually agreed upon time to pickup the dog,
5. coming to pick up the dog at the scheduled time, and
6. signing a form acknowledging ownership and indemnifying Houndhaven in the event another party claims ownership.
ON SATURDAY, MARCH 9, A YOUNG MALE GREAT DANE WAS BROUGHT TO HOUNDHAVEN.  HE HAD BEEN A STRAY IN THE KISSIMMEE AREA FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE WEEKS AND WAS POSTED ON MULTIPLE INTERNET LOST AND FOUND PAGES BUT NO OWNER HAS COME FORWARD.  HE HAS NOW BEEN PLACED UP FOR ADOPTION AND HIS PHOTO IS BELOW.

JAX

Jax is a handsome young adult black lab mix. Our best estimate of his age is 12-18 months. He weighs 48 lbs. and has tested negative for heartworms. Jax loves to go for walks and is a very sweet guy. Prior to Houndhaven, he was a stray in northwest FL. He hasn’t had any accidents in his kennel at the shelter. He has been brought up to date on vaccines, is on monthly heartworm prevention and will be neutered soon. If you like to hike or go for walks, Jax would love to go with you.

ABBY

Abby’s previous family turned her in because they couldn’t give her the time and attention they knew she deserved. Abby is a female yellow lab. She is an adult dog (approximately 6-7 years old), spayed and heartworm negative. Abby is a precious girl and is adjusting to being at Houndhaven after having been in a home. She weighs 86 lbs. (down from 98 lbs.!) and is on a diet at Houndhaven. We are trying to get her back to the healthy girl she was before becoming obese, so it will be a while before she is ready for a home—but stay tuned!

DIXIE GRACE

Dixie Grace is a super sweet female chocolate lab mix. Her previous owner turned her in because they said she climbed fences but she has not done that since she’s been at Houndhaven. Dixie is friendly to everyone, doesn’t mess in her kennel and is spayed. Dixie tested positive for heartworms, so she’ll be undergoing treatment and ready for her new home around the end of May. She can’t get enough hugs and leans against you for more. Dixie is estimated to be 3 years old (young adult category). This darling girl weighs 67 lbs. and will be a loving dog for a lucky family.

ARLENE & CARMELLA

Arlene and Carmella have been together their entire lives. They were surrendered to animal control by their owner who was moving and couldn’t take them. They love spending time together. They’re good-natured sweet girls. Both are adults: Arlene (yellow lab) is 7 years old and weighs 54 lbs. Carmella (chocolate lab) is 8 years old and weighs 65 lbs. They’re both spayed and appear to be housebroken. It will make such a difference in their lives if someone could open their heart and provide them with a great home together.

NITRO

Nitro just wants to be your buddy. He’s an adult yellow lab and is six years old. He was going to be a working dog with the Department of Homeland Security, but he wanted to play not work. Through no fault of his, his next owner unfortunately could no longer keep Nitro. He is handsome, really smart and curious—he’s interested in what’s going on around him and he wants to help. He weighs 67 lbs. and is very strong. Nitro LOVES belly rubs. His previous owner said he’s housebroken, is good with people, and enjoys walks. Nitro is very lovable.

MARMADUKE

Marmaduke is a male blue merle great dane. Our best estimate is that he’s a young adult (3-4 years old). Duke is handsome, regal and always alert to his surroundings. He was a stray seen for weeks in a field and a kind-hearted person thankfully got Duke out of that situation and safely to Houndhaven. His rescuer said he is good with other dogs and cats and is housebroken. Because of being on his own so long, Duke weighs 110 lbs. which is thin for a male great dane. He walks beautifully on a leash. His appearance and size might seem intimidating, but Duke has a sensitive side. Because of his size and because he can be mouthy, we will not adopt to families with young children.

MAY

May is an adorable young pup. She’s just 20 weeks old and is a black lab mix. She was a stray in Florida’s Panhandle area and is now at Houndhaven where we have promised her we’ll help her find her perfect home. May weighs about 18 lbs. right now. Having a puppy in the family is fun but also requires time and patience to train them to become well-mannered adult dogs. If you can make a lifelong commitment to this cuddly pup, please submit an application.

Alexa was found as a stray by animal control in northwest FL. She is heartworm positive and will be available once her treatment is completed around mid-May. But she’s worth waiting for—so if you think she’s the dog for you, please review our policies and complete an application.

She was a stray picked up by a central FL animal control before coming to Houndhaven. She’s a sweetheart and good natured. Janie is in our young adult category (approximately two years old) and is a chocolate lab mix. She weighs 44 lbs. Ozzy is a neutered black lab and is heartworm negative. He’s been brought up to date on vaccines. This is Ozzy’s chance to find a forever home and he will give you unconditional love forever in return.

GEORGIA

Georgia is enthusiastic about life. She is always ready to play and is hoping for a family that will include her in their adventures. Georgia is a female black lab in our young adult category. Our best estimate is that she’s about two years old. She weighs 36 lbs., tested negative for heartworms and is already spayed. Georgia was a stray so we don’t know about her background, but we do know she’s friendly (she liked everyone and everything at our recent adoption event), gives lots of kisses and you can’t help but be happy when she’s around.

TRUDY

Trudy is a very friendly pup.  She was adopted from animal control and was returned after just a few days because the dog in the home wouldn’t accept her.  This poor baby has a temporary, non-contagious skin condition that has caused a lot of hair loss right now, but it is very treatable and should be cleared up quickly with proper care.  Despite everything she is affectionate and playful.  We estimate that Trudy, a light brown mixed breed, is seven months old.  She currently weighs about 36 lbs.

BEAUTY

The name Beauty is fitting for this very pretty girl. At 1 ½ years old she is in our young adult category but she has a lot of puppy playfulness in her. Beauty was adopted but turned in to animal control by her previous family when they moved. Beauty is a black lab mix and her whole 49 lb. body wiggles when she sees you. She has tested positive for heartworms but we will have her treated for that before she’s placed in a home. Beauty is already spayed. She wants her next home to be her forever home. A completed application starts the process to adopt lovely Beauty.
