Adoptable Dogs

Please note:

If a dog was brought to the shelter as a stray, we adhere to the following policy regarding returning the dog to a party claiming to own it.  We have the following policy regarding stray intakes:

The owner of such dog may reclaim by:
1. emailing houndhaveninc@aol.com within 5 days of the date the dog came to Houndhaven,
2. identifying the dog accurately,
3. providing proof of ownership,
4. promptly arranging a mutually agreed upon time to pickup the dog,
5. coming to pick up the dog at the scheduled time, and
6. signing a form acknowledging ownership and indemnifying Houndhaven in the event another party claims ownership.

LAYLA

Pretty Layla is on the smaller side for a full-grown yellow lab. She weighs just under 52 lbs. Miss Layla absolutely loves people and wants all the human attention for herself. At Houndhaven, she thinks anyone coming through the door can’t be coming to see the other dogs, they must be coming to see her. Because Layla would rather socialize with people, she needs to be the only dog in the home. She is already spayed, microchipped, current on vaccines, and on monthly heartworm prevention. Layla was originally surrendered by a breeder to animal control, along with a number of other dogs. She is two years old. If you can give Layla the type of home she needs, please review our policies and submit a completed application. You will get a lifetime of loyalty and love from her in return.

Mia was originally from Alabama and was turned in to an animal control in northwest FL. She is already spayed, up to date on vaccines and on monthly heartworm prevention. To give sweet Mia a forever home, please review our policies and submit an application.

WINSTON & HARPER

Winston and Harper love everyone they meet. They’re happy, affectionate dogs. Both are bonded 6-year old adult yellow labs. Harper is a female and Winston is a male. They were living in Georgia, but sadly, their owner passed away and they’re now with us looking for a new family. When they’re being walked at the shelter, they check on each other to make sure they’re not too far apart from each other. Besides doing well with adults, we’re told they also do well with children, other dogs and cats. Winston and Harper are both extremely overweight (Winston currently weighs 120 lbs and Harper 105 lbs!) and are on Houndhaven’s diet and exercise plan to get ready for the beach this summer. Winston and Harper need to be adopted as a pair.

MOLLY & KOVA

Molly

Molly

Molly and Kova are two good natured, friendly female lab siblings. They’re two years old. Molly is a chocolate lab and Kova is a black lab. They were surrendered together and are bonded to each other. They love to play, and Kova even tries to get Molly to play with her on walks. Their previous owner said they’re good with children and adults and other dogs. They haven’t been around cats previously, so we’re not sure how they would be with them. Kova weighs 92 lbs. and is strong. Molly is the smaller of the two and weighs 70 lbs. Both girls are heartworm negative. They will be spayed soon. Molly and Kova are looking for a home where they can stay together.

LEON

Leon is a lovable mush ball. All it takes is a few kind words to this guy and he’s giving gentle kisses and rolling over on his back for tummy rubs. He’s a male chocolate lab mix puppy and we’re estimating that Leon is 11 months old. He weighs 44 lbs. and is heartworm negative. He was a stray in the panhandle area of FL so we don’t know his background prior to being picked up by animal control. Leon will be neutered soon. Review our policies and submit an application to give Leon a home.

DANTE

Sweet, young pup Dante is a male black lab mix. He’s approximately 7 months old and was picked up as a stray by animal control in northwest FL. Unfortunately, he probably never received any puppy shots in his 7 months and as a result, he is suffering from demodectic mange, an upper respiratory infection and parvo. He is getting round-the-clock care at the emergency vet and fighting for his life. Prayers for his recovery are most appreciated. We’re praying for the day we get sweet Dante hugs again. If you would like to donate to help cover some of his medical bills, you can donate with a credit card via our Paypal Giving Fund link or you can mail a check to PO Box 185, Minneola FL 34755.

TOBY

Toby is a 3 year old male black lab. He is very handsome and smart and was in training to become a companion dog, but he decided he was better suited to be someone’s snuggle buddy. Toby is housebroken and friendly to both men and women and other dogs. He hasn’t been around children or cats. He loves to fetch sticks so we suspect he may have been being trained to retrieve items. Toby is a big guy (89 lbs.) and is strong on a leash. He’s already neutered and up-to-date on vaccines and is ready and waiting for his forever family.

FALLON

When Fallon looks up from her kennel with her eyes full of hope and her tail wagging, she’s hard to resist. All she wants is someone to love and to be loved in return. Fallon is a female, young adult lab/hound mix. We estimate that she’s 12-18 months old. While we don’t have any background on her (she was a stray in northwest FL), since she’s been with us she’s always super sweet and friendly. Being young, sometimes on walks her inner puppy comes out and she’d rather play, but she will catch on with a little guidance. Fallon is heartworm negative, up to date on shots and spayed. She weighs 52 lbs. If your family can give Fallon the love she’s hoping to find, review our policies and submit an application.

She’s a female black lab mix and her current weight is 26 lbs. Bindi was a stray in northwest FL and picked up by animal control before arriving at Houndhaven. If you have the patience and time needed to commit to training a puppy and would like to adopt this precious tail wagger, please review our policies and submit an application.

Oliver is such a handsome hunk, but he hasn’t let his good looks go to his head—he’s sweet and friendly and gentle. He’s a male black lab and is in our young adult category. His estimated age is 1-2 years old. Oliver was found as a stray by a northwest FL animal control. He weighs 71 lbs. and has tested negative for heartworms. We will have Oliver neutered soon. To adopt gorgeous Oliver, please review our policies and submit an application.

BIRDIE

Meet cutie pie Birdie, an adult chocolate lab mix (our best estimate is that she’s around 3 years old). Birdie is a very sweet, very good girl. She has been spayed and has tested negative for heartworms. We took her in at Houndhaven because she has a deformity of her right front foot and we would like to help her. If the vet says it’s possible to fix, we will do that for Birdie. She still enjoys going for walks and her foot doesn’t stop her. She was picked up by a central Florida animal control as a stray. She’s a happy pup that deserves a wonderful home. To adopt Birdie, please review our policies and submit an application.  (Update:  Birdie has had surgery on her foot and is doing great.)

GENTRY

When you meet Gentry, you can see this sweet, sweet boy has had a rough time of it.  He has quite a few old bite marks as well as fresh ones on his body and is recovering from having to live tied up with a heavy chain around his neck (it was still around his neck when animal control found him).  He’s a little scared at first, and who can blame him, but his tail wags and he wants to be friends.  A little TLC and a few treats go a long way to win him over.  Gentry is an adult yellow lab mix (estimated to be 6 years old) and weighs about 85 lbs.  We’ve brought him up to date on vaccines, started him on monthly heartworm prevention, and had him microchipped.  This adorable guy wants to leave his past behind and needs a family that will treat him with kindness and shower him with love and kisses for the rest of his life.  To adopt Gentry, please review our policies and submit an application.

MARCELO

For several weeks, a stray dog had been coming to Houndhaven at night, desperate for food. From the surveillance video we could see he was emaciated and injured–having trouble with his back legs. After many days of leaving food out for him at night and with the help of a wonderful person named Marcelo (as a tribute, that stray is now named Marcelo), we were able to catch the stray dog so we could get him the veterinary care he so desperately needed. And then the real work started, dozens of ticks were pulled off of him. He received fluids, antibiotics, xrays. He had blood in his urine. Our vet found that he had a broken pelvis, broken leg and a shattered bone in his penis. Marcelo has had surgeries to put him back together and he has now started to gain weight. Through all this, Marcelo has a strong will to live and is a gentle boy with a sweet soul. We estimate that Marcelo is just 1 ½ years old. We received great news at his latest vet visit. Marcelo has gained 5 lbs. since his arrival which is more than 10% of his 37 lb. body weight! Thank you very much to everyone who has offered words of encouragement, prayed for his recovery and sent donations. If you would like to help Marcelo on his road to recovery, you can donate with a credit card via our Paypal Giving Fund link or you can mail a check to PO Box 185, Minneola FL 34755.
