Adoptable Dogs

Please note:

If a dog was brought to the shelter as a stray, we adhere to the following policy regarding returning the dog to a party claiming to own it.  We have the following policy regarding stray intakes:

The owner of such dog may reclaim by:
1. emailing houndhaveninc@aol.com within 5 days of the date the dog came to Houndhaven,
2. identifying the dog accurately,
3. providing proof of ownership,
4. promptly arranging a mutually agreed upon time to pickup the dog,
5. coming to pick up the dog at the scheduled time, and
6. signing a form acknowledging ownership and indemnifying Houndhaven in the event another party claims ownership.

ALLY GATOR

Ally Gator is an adorable, unique basset/lab blend with the head and body of a lab but built low to the ground like a basset. Ally will be the perfect addition to any family—beside being a sweetheart, she gets along with other dogs, cats and children, and she’s housebroken. She’s 11 years old but looks and acts younger plus you have the benefit of a mature, mellow dog. She loves to walk so much that she has a cute little trot to her step as she walks. She weighs 50 lbs. Ally was turned in by her previous owner through no fault of hers. Because of a previous back injury, Ally can’t be allowed to jump on or off furniture or do stairs. She’s fine otherwise, we just don’t want her to reinjure herself. If you would like to be the lucky family that adopts our Ally Gator, review our policies and submit an application.

BIRDIE

PHOTO COMING SOON!

Meet cutie pie Birdie, an adult chocolate lab mix (our best estimate is that she’s around 3 years old). Birdie is a very sweet, very good girl. She has been spayed and has tested negative for heartworms. We took her in at Houndhaven because she has a deformity of her right front foot and we would like to help her. If the vet says it’s possible to fix, we will do that for Birdie. She still enjoys going for walks and her foot doesn’t stop her. She was picked up by a central Florida animal control as a stray. She’s a happy pup that deserves a wonderful home. To adopt Birdie, please review our policies and submit an application.

GENTRY

When you meet Gentry, you can see this sweet, sweet boy has had a rough time of it.  He has quite a few old bite marks as well as fresh ones on his body and is recovering from having to live tied up with a heavy chain around his neck (it was still around his neck when animal control found him).  He’s a little scared at first, and who can blame him, but his tail wags and he wants to be friends.  A little TLC and a few treats go a long way to win him over.  Gentry is an adult yellow lab mix (estimated to be 6 years old) and weighs about 85 lbs.  We’ve brought him up to date on vaccines, started him on monthly heartworm prevention, and had him microchipped.  This adorable guy wants to leave his past behind and needs a family that will treat him with kindness and shower him with love and kisses for the rest of his life.  To adopt Gentry, please review our policies and submit an application.

COCO BEAN

Cinnamon Puff and Coco Bean are two pretty chocolate lab sisters. Besides going for walks, some of their favorite activities are giving and receiving affection. These gorgeous ladies are originally from Louisiana where they were abandoned by their previous owner. Because they were neglected, they both tested positive for heartworms. They have now been spayed and are being treated for the heartworms.  Coco will be ready to go to her new home around the end of Sept. They are young adults (estimate: 3 years old). Cinnamon weighs 66 lbs. and Coco weighs 57 lbs. They don’t have to be adopted together. In fact, the girls would be happy to be adopted separately. To adopt either sweet girl, please review our policies and submit an application.

MARCELO

For several weeks, a stray dog had been coming to Houndhaven at night, desperate for food. From the surveillance video we could see he was emaciated and injured–having trouble with his back legs. After many days of leaving food out for him at night and with the help of a wonderful person named Marcelo (as a tribute, that stray is now named Marcelo), we were able to catch the stray dog so we could get him the veterinary care he so desperately needed. And then the real work started, dozens of ticks were pulled off of him. He received fluids, antibiotics, xrays. He had blood in his urine. Our vet found that he had a broken pelvis, broken leg and a shattered bone in his penis. Marcelo has had surgeries to put him back together and he has now started to gain weight. Through all this, Marcelo has a strong will to live and is a gentle boy with a sweet soul. We estimate that Marcelo is just 1 ½ years old. We received great news at his latest vet visit. Marcelo has gained 5 lbs. since his arrival which is more than 10% of his 37 lb. body weight! Thank you very much to everyone who has offered words of encouragement, prayed for his recovery and sent donations. If you would like to help Marcelo on his road to recovery, you can donate with a credit card via our Paypal Giving Fund link or you can mail a check to PO Box 185, Minneola FL 34755.

HIGGINS

Higgins is a whole 12 lbs. of terrier cuteness. Unfortunately, this little guy has been let down by humans in the past and hasn’t been taken care of which resulted in him being hit by a car and sustaining a broken left rear leg and a dislocated right hip. He has recovered from surgery to repair his broken leg. In addition to his injuries, he had worms, fleas, and tested positive for heartworms. He was a very brave through this, wagging his tail and rolling over for the belly rubs he loves. He also loves toys.  Higgins has been neutered. He is a young adult (estimate of age is 3 years old). Higgins has now completed heartworm treatment and is ready to be placed in a home.  If you can’t adopt Higgins, any donations to help with his medical bills would be much appreciated.

NELLIE

Super sweet Nellie is a female black lab mix. She was a stray found by animal control in northwest Florida so we don’t have any history on her, but she has been a well behaved girl who loves people since she arrived at the shelter. She has a very sweet face and soaks up all the attention we give her. Sometimes she even prefers cuddles over treats. She loves to play with Nigel in the yard also.  Nellie has been spayed and we have already brought her up to date on vaccines, started her on monthly heartworm prevention and have had her microchipped. She’s heartworm negative. Nellie weighs 57 lbs. is in our adult category (dogs that are 5-8 years old). Our best estimate is that she’s approximately 5-6 years old.

HAZEL

Hazel really enjoys going for a walk and would love a family who would take her for daily walks and then come home to relax on the sofa with her. Sweet Hazel is just the best girl. She’s quiet, well behaved, and housebroken. She knows commands (sit, give paw, roll over). She doesn’t complain when we put medicine in her ears or she gets a bath. Hazel’s previous owners dropped her off at someone’s house and due to a change in circumstances never came back for her. The kind person who took her in brought her to Houndhaven to get the proper vet care for her and to find her a great home. She told us Hazel is good with children and adults, other dogs and cats. Hazel has an ear infection and has lost hair due to a flea allergy. We’re treating those and she will soon be just as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside. Hazel is a female chocolate lab, weighs 65 lbs., has tested negative for heartworms and will be spayed soon. She is in our adult category (we estimate that she is about 7 years old).

PIPPY

Pippy is a sweet, sweet eleven month old puppy. Happy and eager to please. Pippy is an energetic black lab who was an owner turn-in.  Pippy weighs 60 lbs. currently and is a bit chubby.  She is on a diet and we hope will be closer to 50 pounds soon.  Pippy tested negative for heartworms and has been spayed.  Active families will be the best match for her. If you would like to adopt Pippy, please review our policies and submit an application.

ABBY

ABBY BEFORE LOSING 43 POUNDS

ABBY AFTER LOSING 43 POUNDS!

Abby’s previous family turned her in because they couldn’t give her the time and attention they knew she deserved. Abby is a female yellow lab. She is an adult dog (approximately five years old), spayed and heartworm negative.  She weighs 55 lbs. (down from 98 lbs.!) and has met her weight loss goal at Houndhaven!  She would do best in a home with no other dogs.  She is as sweet as anything with people, however, and will kiss your chin to thank you for giving her attention.  We have already had the cataracts caused by being obese removed, and she is doing great.  Abby has been a trooper through it all and is enjoying getting to see better!  Now all she needs is a HOME!!
